I Stand Corrected

Yesterday when I said: "I defy you to find a more atrocious, self-indulgent, self-important piece-of-crap tune," I knew someone would find something uniquely interesting. And that someone is new Super-Secret Friend Barry King (barry_king). Barry scores big points by mentioning The Shaggs. Here's two quotes:

"As the obscure LP achieved recognition among collectors, the band was praised for their raw, intuitive composition style and lyrical honesty. Philosophy of the World was later reissued, and the compilation Shaggs' Own Thing was released in 1982. The Shaggs are now seen as a groundbreaking outsider music group."

"Frank Zappa is reported to have said of the Shaggs, "This sounds like the missing link between Fanny and Captain Beefheart & his Magic Band." Zappa rated The Shaggs #3 best band in history in a Norwegian newspaper (April 1988)."

When I was listening to "Philosophy of the World" I was reminded of Captain Beefheart's great album Trout Mask Replica.

These young women rawk! Or try to in their own idiosyncratic say. I think of it as Dada Goes to the Junior Prom. Check 'em out!

I can say only this: A squid eating dough in a polyethylene bag is fast and bulbous.

Actually, I can say one other thing. For grad school, I had to read an article on the Shaggs by Susan Orleans. It was informative and gobsmacking, both. The address is below, if you're interested. Good stuff!

Thanks for the link! "Depending on whom you ask, the Shaggs were either the best band of all time or the worst." That's how I feel about Trout Mask Replica.

Coolness, Linda! "Pachuco Cadaver" is one of my fave tunes. :-)

If anyone's curious, I'll post the lyrics. I love this tune!

Pachuco Cadaver by Captain Beefheart

Spoken: "A squid eating dough in a polyethylene bag is fast and bulbous. Got me?"

When she wears her bolero then she begin t` dance
All the pachucos start withold`n hands
When she drives her Chevy Sissy`s don`t dare t` glance
Yellow jackets `n red debbles buzzin` round `er hair hive ho
She wears her past like uh present
Take her fancy in the past
Her sedan skims along the floorboard
Her two pipes hummin` carbon cum
Got her wheel out of uh B-29 Bomber brodey knob amber
Spanish fringe `n talcum tazzles FOREVER AMBER
She looks like an old squaw indian
she`s 99 she won`t go down
Avocado green `n alfalfa yellow adorn her t` the ground
Tatooes `n tarnished utenzles uh snow white bag full o` tunes
Drives uh cartune around drives uh cartune around
Broma` seltzet blue umbrella keeps her up off the ground
Round red sombreros wrap `er high tap horsey shoes
When she unfolds her umbrella pachucos got the blues
Her lovin` makes me so happy
If I smiled I`d crack m` chin
Her eyes are so peaceful thinks it`s heaven she been
Her skin is as smooth as the daisies
In the center where the sun shines in
Smiles as sweet as honey
Her teeth as clean as the combs where the bees go in
When she walks flowers surround her
Let their nectar come in to the air around her
She loves her love sticks out like straws
Her lovin` sticks out like straws

I had a copy of Trout Mask Replica. On vinyl LP. I left it in the sun. It warped. The flavor was improved.

If you're interested, here's a vid on how they made Trout Mask Replica. Great stuff!

Thanks for the link, yes. And by John Peel, too. Pop has indeed eaten itself.

Gads, that was just...painful! Wow.
Mar. 8th, 2010 06:45 pm (UTC)
Yes, but an interesting moment in American pop-music culture. ;-)

If by interesting you mean painful. ;)

Ah, Frank Zappa! I used his nose in a story once.

Wow. That's almost too awful for words.

Oh, I don't know. There's a certain honesty about it that I don't find in today's pre-processed, pre-packaged pop music. Though perhaps this sound is a bit too honest. ;-)

Love those shiny nylons.
Mar. 9th, 2010 12:14 am (UTC)
They certainly got the legs for it. ;-)

Is there something wrong with me? I don't know if I should admit this, but I actually kind of liked this song...not that I'd ever, ever buy this album or anything. But maybe someone would? Perhaps it should be given a chance at new life and a new release. Stick it on some hip ipod commercial or something? I bet it would sell. Or maybe I just listened to too much Zappa during my youth?

Truth told, I rather like this tune too. Mums the word, though. ;-)

I won't tell anyone if you don't. It'll be our little secret ;)
